RB D UNIT3 READING 1 “The Golden Serpent”

“The Golden Serpent”
In this Indian fable, a king asks a wise man named Pundabi and his helper Ali to solve a mystery. However, the king does not know what the mystery is. After thinking, Pundabi reveals the mystery: Someone has stolen the king’s Golden Serpent. The king didn’t know he had a Golden Serpent but insists they find it.
They search the village but find nothing. The king thinks only of finding the Golden Serpent and ignores the villagers’ poverty. Pundabi tells the king he has solved the mystery. He tells the king to close his eyes and count to 100 and he will see the Golden Serpent. Ali worries that the king will still not find the Golden
Serpent when he opens his eyes. Pundabi replies, “Some people never do. But that is another mystery.”

Literary Words

A moral is a lesson taught in a literary work, especially a fable.
It is a practical lesson about right and wrong ways to behave.
Many fables have a stated moral that comes at the end of the story. In “The Fox and the Crow,” the moral is the last sentence:
Do not trust flatterers.
Motivation is the reason for a character’s actions. Motivation results from a combination of the character’s personality and the situation in which the character finds him- or herself. For example, in
“The Fox and the Crow,” the fox is motivated by hunger. The crow is motivated by her need for compliments.
